Week of November 13th

Good Morning and Happy Monday, Parents!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I know it is hard to believe, but Friday marks the end of the 1st Trimester!  I will be spending this week hunting down missing work and putting in last minute grades.  If you think about it, please get on Option C to see if your child is missing anything for me.  If an assignment has an E, that means your child did not need to complete that assignment.

We have a lot going on this week!  Here's a sneak peek!

Religion
We will begin Chapter 5 this week, which continues on with the Sacrament of Baptism.  I have hung up the Personal Baptism Posters in the hallway, and they are beautiful!  We will have our Chapter 5 Test next Tuesday!  We are also finishing up our Baptism Packet and working on our buttons and magnets that we will sell on December 1st.

Reading/Language Arts
We will read chapter 16 of Hatchet today and discuss chapters 13-16 tomorrow.  We will have a quiz over these chapters and vocabulary on Wednesday.  We will complete the novel during the rest of the week and NEXT Tuesday, we will have a test over the entire novel.  I handed out Section 4 Vocabulary definitions last week.  Make sure your child is studying those words for Wednesday.  Our Word of the Week this week is Ludicrous.  We will fill out our Word Map today in class, and the children will be given another Essay Map to help begin their rough drafts for their prompts.  Essay Maps will be due tomorrow.  Our Grammar concept this week focuses on Direct Quotations and writing Dialogue.  We will learn a new concept each day and children will have to complete the Lesson 10 Grammar Packet by Friday.  We will also have a quiz over these concepts on Friday.  Spelling Packets will also be due Friday.

Math
My Math class will be working on Lessons 47-50 this week.  I don't usually have tests on Monday, but due to the early dismissal this Friday, I will have to have the children take the Cumulative 9 Test next Monday.

Science
We will read lesson2 and 3 in our Science books this week.  We also have a Chapter 3 Vocabulary Quiz tomorrow in class.  On Thursday, we will set up a lab that will tell us what materials break down the fastest in soil.  We'll be able check the results next Tuesday!   I'm not too happy with how the timing worked out for this chapter because I will not be able to finish it before Thanksgiving break.  Unfortunately, this means we will be taking our chapter 3 test AFTER Thanksgiving break.  I will make sure the children have a study guide with key points to focus on for the test, and we will do a good review in class the day before the test.  Once we have tested over Chapter 3, we will spend some time working on an in class group project on Biomes.  Then we will work on some Amphibian Research!!!  More to come on that!

*Reminders*
-Magazine Turn in Day is Wednesday!
-Scholastic Book Fair all Week
-Out of uniform all week!
-Free ice cream at lunch tomorrow!
-Please make sure your child has a snack every day!  Sometimes I think the kiddos aren't bringing a snack because they know I will have something-but my snack supply has run out right now.
-Children need gym clothes every Monday.  I've noticed a couple of my little darlings have not had gym clothes almost every week.  This will reflect on their gym grades.

I hope all of you have a fabulous week!  As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at wooda@saseas.org, and of course, thank you for sharing your children with me!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Week of November 6th

Good Afternoon Parents!  Can you believe it is already November??  We have a full week of school this week, an early dismissal next Friday, and then 2 days of school the following week!!  Look how close Thanksgiving is!!!!  The end of the 1st Trimester is on November 17th!  We have lots to get in before then!!  Here's what's going on this week!

Religion:
Tuesday we will be reviewing for our chapter 4 test, which will be given on Wednesday. For the rest of this week and next week, we will be going through a Baptism packet and working on the buttons and magnets we will be selling on December 1st.

Reading:
On Tuesday we will have a quiz over Hatchet chapters 9-12 and the Section 3 vocabulary.  We will then get started on chapters 13-16, which we will be quizzed over next week!

Math:
Today we worked on Lesson 44 and we will do Lesson 45 tomorrow.  On Wednesday, there will be a Cumulative test on lessons 1-39

Science:
We began Chapter 3 today and worked on the vocabulary for the chapter.  There will be a vocabulary quiz on November 14th over these words.  Tomorrow we will take a look at our local ecosystems (weather permitting).  We'll spend the rest of the week discussing the parts of the ecosystem and how the different organisms interact with one another.

Expressions:
Our new word of the week is Conundrum.  Students will write a paragraph answering the age-old conundrum of what came first, the chicken or the egg?  The children should be bringing home an essay map today that will help them organize their thoughts.  This is something new, so take a look at it if you get the chance!  The Grammar skill we will be working on this week include Subordinating Conjunctions, Dependent and Independent Clauses, and Compound/Complex Sentences.  There will be a quiz over these concepts on Friday

Today, I couldn't help but notice how chatty the children were.  I am pretty tolerant with the talking, but some of my little turkeys have been getting a little out of hand.  I also noticed quite a few children getting a little overly-expressive with their opinions on homework assignments and tasks we are to be completing in class.  I have explained to the children that though I would love to hear every thought they are thinking, this classroom isn't necessarily a democracy. They will have to do the work whether they complain or not.  I was hoping you could also remind your child of this at home.

I hope all of you have a great week!  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me!  As always, thank you for sharing your children with me...I still love them even though they were a little crazy today!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Whew! Happy Friday

Well it has certainly been a crazy week!  With Halloween, 2 Masses, and a full moon upon us, it's a wonder we were able to sit down and learn!  But we did!!!  We had a full week full of fun labs, designing arms and measuring Halloween Candy Calories!  We even got to have a sweet treat in math with a Skittles Scavenger Hunt!  Next week, we are going to be back to a regular schedule...hopefully!

Next week we will begin our Chapter on Ecosystems in Science!  I can't wait to dive into that!  I expect this chapter to take us to Thanksgiving, and instead of another Lab-a-polooza after the chapter, we will be working on creating Biome reports and displays.  All work will be completed in class for this, but you may need to send in supplies for your kiddos to make their projects with!  Stay tuned for more on that!

Reminders
*Students' Your Baptism Posters due on Monday.  Directions were sent home on Monday
*Mystery Book Report due on Nov. 9th
*Scholastic Book Orders due on Nov. 10th
*Bring Gym clothes for Monday!
*Pack a snack daily!  My snack supply is diminishing quickly!!

Have a great weekend!  Thanks for all you do and as always, thank you for sharing your children with me!

week of October 30th

Good Morning Parents!  Happy Halloween Week!  We have some different things going on with our schedule this week, so please be mindful of any changes you may see!
First, we will be celebrating Halloween tomorrow with a parade and party after lunch and recess.  Please make sure your child brings an appropriate costume to change into after lunch, as well as any snacks, paper products, etc...you have signed up to bring for the party.

On Tuesday, we will also get the chance to work with our 2nd grade buddies!  We will be decorating pumpkins and writing sentences!  Keep an eye out for photos!

We will have Mass on Wednesday AND Thursday this week, and our homeroom has prepared the Mass for Wednesday.  Please join us if you are able to!

Here's what's going on in class this week!

Religion:
We will begin Chapter 4 in our textbook this week.  We have also started looking into the weekend readings for upcoming Masses.  You will be seeing papers with the word, SOAP, written across the top.  This stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.  The children seem to enjoy filling these sheets out, and it gives us a chance to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Math:
Today we will do a fun activity with Mean, Median, and Mode and SKITTLES!  I think candy always makes math more fun!  The rest of the week we will work on Lessons 41,42, and 43.  We will have a Cumulative test next Wednesday.

Science:
Tomorrow, we will be graphing the number of calories in some of our favorite halloween candies!  Thanks to all who sent candy in for us!  On Wednesday and Thursday we will be designing model arms and testing how strong they are!  Friday we will end Lab-a-Palooza Part 2 with making our versions of robotic arms!  Next week we will begin chapter 3 and focus on Ecosystems!

Reading/Language Arts:
This week our new word is Desist.  Students will fill out Word Maps in class today and will need to start Rough Drafts tonight!  We don't want to do this on Halloween!!!  Final Drafts will still be due on Friday.  We also have our spelling packets and Spelling Test due on Friday.  On Wednesday, we will be finishing up the Grammar packet that was given out two weeks ago.  We will review the content on Thursday and students will have a quiz on Friday.  The quiz will cover Direct and Indirect Objects, Compound Direct Objects, Conjunctions, Run-on Sentences, and Subordinate Conjunctions.  Students should also be finishing up their October Book Reports.  They aren't due until next week, but if your child finishes early, I will allow them to present early!  We are moving right along in Hatchet. I am hoping to read chapters 9-12 this week and test over those chapters early next week!  The children really seem to enjoy this novel!  I will give them section 3 vocabulary definitions today, so it seems like a good time to start studying them!

*Reminders*
-Please have your child pack a snack each day.  My supplies are dwindling!
-You may want to take inventory on your child's school supplies.  I seem to have more and more students without pencils, highlighters, pens, etc...each day.  I know I have to replenish my daughters' supplies this weekend!

Have a fantastic week!  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me!  Thank you for sharing your children with me!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Happy Early Weekend!

Hello Parents!  I can't believe it, but we are at the end of our week already!  It seems like each week goes by a little bit quicker than the last!  I guess that means we are having fun in the 5th grade!

And today, we certainly had some fun!  Check out our Science pics on my photo link.  We made aluminum foil boat designs and tested out how many pennies they would hold before sinking.  Some designs held up to 16 pennies!!!  Next week we will continue Lab-a-Palooza Part 2 and work on Halloween Candy Nutrition, and designing a model arm and testing the amount of weight it can hold.

We've also been working on our buttons that we will be selling on December first.  The children seem to really enjoy this.  I think we will bring in quite a bit of money for the Adopt a Family program!

As you know, we ended our chapter on Sacraments in Religion class this week.  We will now be focusing on the individual Sacraments, starting with Baptism.  We will be reading two chapters out of the textbook, and I also have a wonderful packet on Baptism that we will work on between chapters 4 and 5.  You will see similar packets throughout the next several weeks, as we approach each of the Sacraments.

Overall, the children did a great job on the Science, Math, and Religion tests this week!  I can see they are all really working on time management.  I have noticed much better responses when we review as a class before the tests and quizzes!  This is an awesome sign of growth!!!  If you get a chance over the weekend, please log in to Option C to check out grades and look to see if your child has anything missing for me.  The end of the trimester is quickly approaching and we don't want low grades because we forgot to turn something in.

*Reminders*
-Please make sure your child brings gym clothes on Monday
-Pack a snack everyday!
-Halloween is Tuesday!  Be sure your child brings an appropriate costume to change into after lunch and recess!
-Tuesday night, make sure you go through your child's trick-or-treat bag and pull out any butterfingers and reese's cups.  I heard they were bad for kids but great for Mrs. Wood!!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!  Stay warm and cozy!  As always, thank you for sharing your children with me!!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Week of October 23rd

Hello Families!  Happy Rainy Monday!

I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!  I think the fall weather is finally on its way in!  I love sweatshirt weather!!!

We have a super-busy 4 day week this week!  Along with our regular classroom things, we are also going to start designing buttons and magnets to sell in December.  I think the children will really enjoy doing that!  We should all have our October Book Report directions now.  Please see that your child is working on this project a little bit each day, as it will take careful planning for it to turn out correctly!  The children are also being asked to write an essay about our trip to the Cincinnati Art Museum last week!  We spent some time discussing this in class this morning.  The children will have until Thursday to finish the essay, and it will replace the writing prompt for this week!

Religion:
We finished up Chapter 3 Today, and will review for our test tomorrow!  Along with the information the text gives, students will also need to be able to tell which Sacraments are Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, and Sacraments of Community Service.

Science:
We also finished up Chapter 3 in Science today.  We will review tomorrow in class and the test will be on Wednesday.  Children should review the vocabulary as well as text information.  On Thursday, we will do a fun Penny Boat Lab in class that the children are sure to enjoy!  Next week we will have Lab-a-palooza Part 2!!!  We will do a graphing activity with all the Halloween candy you have so kindly sent in on Monday!  I still need about 10 boxes of sugar cubes, if anyone is interested in sending one or two in.  Thank you for always supporting our labs!  Next week we will also be testing how much weight model arms can hold and making "robotic" arms.  Our focus in this chapter has been the Design Process, so I am anxious to see how well the children apply the concepts they have learned!

Math:
In my Math class, we will complete Lesson 40 today and have a Cumulative test over lessons up to 35 tomorrow.  We seem to be working at a comfortable pace and I plan to keep with it.  The tests have been quite good, though I am getting a bit concerned about the quality of our homework.  Some children are rushing through the work, making silly mistakes.  You might want to have chat about this with your child.

Reading/Lang.Arts:
No Writing Prompt this week!  We will still learn a new vocabulary word, but we will focus on writing the museum essay instead of having a new writing prompt.  We will be getting a new spelling packet today  The Vocab Test and Spelling Test will be on Thursday, and the Spelling Packet will be due Thursday as well.  We will be reading chapters 7 and 8 in Hatchet this week.  On Wednesday, we will review chapters 5-8 and Quiz will be on Thursday.  Vocabulary WILL be on the quiz for these chapters.  In Grammar, we will be discussion Compound Direct Objects, Indirect Objects, and Using and, but, and or.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!  Please email if you have any questions or concerns!  As always, thank you for sharing your children with me!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Happy Happy Friday!

Dear Parents,

Well it has been a week full of fun, birthdays, and special memories!  Thank you so much again, for all the wonderful birthday cards, flowers, and gifts!  I was spoiled rotten on my birthday this year!

I really enjoyed meeting with those who signed up for conferences this week!  It was so nice to get to know you better!  For those who were unable to sign up for conferences this time, please know you can always email or call me if you need to chat about anything!

Next week is another 4 day week!  I rearranged some of the tests and quizzes that I had planned on giving, so keep an eye on the daily Edlio alerts.  As of right now, my Math class will have a test on Tuesday, We will have our science chapter 2 test and Religion chapter 3 tests on Wednesday, and the Hatchet Chapters 5-8 Quiz, Wow Quiz, and Spelling Test on Thursday.    I spoke with the children yesterday about looking ahead and preparing for tests and quizzes in chunks each night so they aren't so overwhelmed the night before the test or quiz.  I will also be putting the new spelling list on Spelling City today!

The field trip today went wonderfully!  I'm so pleased with how well all the children behaved and how attentive they were to our guide!  I hope they enjoyed the experience!!

Have a fabulous weekend!  It's going to be beautiful, so I hope you all get the chance to get out and have some fun!!!  As always, thank you for sharing your children with me!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Week of October 2nd

Good Morning Parents and Welcome to another exciting week in the 5th Grade!!!  We are set to have another great week, and I can't wait to tell you all about it!

Religion – This week, we are continuing our lessons on Mary.  Last week, the students watched a power point presentation on the various titles for Mary.  Then they picked out a title for Mary.  Using the internet, or pictures of Mary in the home, the students were to find a picture that went with their title.  They are to bring these pictures into school by this Tuesday.  Each student will mount their picture on construction paper and write a reflection of why they chose their picture.  This Friday, the fifth grade will be making their very own Rosary!

Language Arts – Our WoW word is impeccable.  The prompt is: What do you thinks tastes impeccable?  We finished the book From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. We will have a test over the novel on Tuesday. This week we are beginning our next novel, Hatchet. The September book project is due Wednesday, October 4th.  The October genre is Mystery.  Students need to be looking for a mystery to read during the month of October.  You won’t believe the book project for the Mystery genre.  We will also be reviewing our Nouns Unit on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We will have a test over Nouns on Thursday.

Science-We began Chapter 2 on Monday by looking up and defining our Chapter 2 Vocabulary Words.  We will have a Quiz over these words on October 12th!  Chapter 2 focuses on Design and Function.  Tuesday the children will complete a lab to design the strongest glue.  Then on Wednesday we will be testing different transport systems and which works best.  If you have any extra newspapers hanging around, please send them in by Wednesday.  We will need them for the lab!

Math-On Monday my class took a Cumulative Test 5A, and the results were fantastic!  We will continue on with Lessons 31, 32, 33, and 34 this week!  The kids are doing a great job!!

**Reminders**

Week of September 18th

Hello 5th Grade Parents!  I hope you and your children had a wonderful 3-day weekend!  As you may already know, the staff here at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton were not off school.  In fact, we were here together working towards our faith formation goals.  It was a beautiful time spent with each other and God, and it left me with a sense of peace and information I can't wait to share with my class!

I have a full week planned for the children this week!  Here are some highlights!

Religion
We will begin Chapter 3 in our text this week.  Chapter 3 focuses on the 7 Sacraments.  I am looking forward to the conversations we will have in class!  We will also be starting to work out of our Bibles a bit more in class.  On Tuesdays after Mass, the children and I will either read the daily Reading or the Gospel together and they will reflect on the readings in their prayer Journals.  On Fridays, we will pick a reading for the upcoming weekend Masses and reflect on it.  This is a great way for the children to become familiar with the parts of the Bible and how to look the Scripture up.  It also gives them the opportunity to have a mental conversation with God.

Science
We will be finishing up our first chapter in Science this week!  Today we will do a lab to test absorbency of different paper towels.  We will then finish Lesson 4 on Wednesday and Review for the Chapter Test on Thursday!  The Chapter 1 Test will be on Friday!  The children have really done a great job with this chapter, so I am expecting everyone to do well on the test!

Reading/Language Arts
Our WoW word is Pedestrian this week!  I am anxious to see how many children actually know what this word means.  I think they will be surprised by the definition we come up with!  We will start our Rough draft today and as always, the Final Copy is due Friday.  I read through last week's prompts, and I am quite happy to see improvements in our writing already!  These children are quite talented!  We will continue our novel and read Chapters 7 and 8 this week.  There will be a quiz over these chapters on Friday.  Spelling packets will go out today and will be due on Friday.  This week's list is up on Spelling City, so if your child has time, he or she can always hop on the website for a few minutes!

Math
We will be working on lessons 24 and 25 this week.  Lesson 24 focuses on the use of Parentheses and the Associative Property, while Lesson 25 focuses on listing factors of whole numbers.  We will have a cumulative test on Thursday over lessons 21-25.  Please be sure your child is reviewing his or her facts each evening for about 5 minutes.

Looking into the future...
I will be having my 1st annual Lab-a-polooza during the week of September 25th.  We will be working on 3 main labs throughout the week that will apply the concepts we have been learning in Science.  I will need 2 bags of gummy worms and about 4 bags of gummy bears for these labs.  If you are interested in donating those items, I would be so appreciative!

I will also be doing a lab later in October that will involve several types of Halloween candy and SEVERAL sugar cubes.  If you would like to donate one bag of the following candies, or a box of sugar cubes, please let me know!  We will need Twix, Hershey Bars, Starbursts, Skittles, Milky Ways, and 3 Musketeers.

Thanks so much for all you do!  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at wooda@saseas.org
As always, thank you for sharing your children with me!

Sincerely,
Mandy Wood

Week of September 4th

Happy Tuesday Families!  I hope all of you had a wonderful, long weekend!  I know I sure did!  Due to the shortened week though, we do have a long to-do list!  Here is a quick run-down on what to expect this week!

Religion:
Last week, we finished up Chapter 1 in our textbook.  On Wednesday, we will have our first Religion test.  Before the test, we will have a quick review over the concepts and ideas we discussed last week.  On Thursday, we will dive right into Chapter 2.  Our class is also preparing the Mass for next Tuesday.  The children will be given their petitions and readings today (hopefully).  If your child has a speaking part, please practice with him/her this week.  We will go to the church on Monday to practice as a class.

Science:
We are continuing our chapter on how scientists investigate this week.  Today, we will prepare several pieces of bread by putting them in different wrappings. At the end of the week, we will observe which wrapping kept the bread the freshest.  We will really be focusing on the Scientific Method-especially interpreting our data.   Don't forget, we have our Chapter 1 Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday!  Students have the words and definitions in their Science Notebooks!

Reading/Lang. Arts/Expression
Our new Word of the Week is Perturbed.  Today we will learn about the word and discuss our new writing prompt.  Students will begin rough drafts today! Our first writing assignments from last week were pretty good!  I expect all of the children to improve each week with their writing skills.  We are definitely off to a great start!

We are continuing our discussion on nouns this week.  We will be focusing on possessive nouns, nouns as subjects, and collective, concrete, and abstract nouns.

Our spelling list is up on Spelling City now.  I have not officially assigned the work to the students on this site, but I would like them to at least visit the site once or twice a week to get familiar with the words.  Packets will go home today and are due Friday.  All the words have the long e and a sounds.

We will be reading Chapters 3 and 4 of our novel this week.  The children really seem to be enjoying The Mixed up Files so far!  On Friday, there will be another quiz over these two chapters.

Math:
Now that all the testing is finished up and the classes are split up, we can finally begin our Math instruction!  The children in my math class will be starting on Lesson 16 of our book.  You can expect math homework each night, as I strongly believe math is one subject that needs to be practiced constantly.  If you know your child still struggles a bit with multiplication facts, please have him/her review the facts for about 5 minutes each night.  I have my daughter flip through flashcards right before she goes to sleep each night. We have made it part of our nightly routine, and it seems to be helping quite a bit!

I hope all of you have a wonderful week!  I missed these kiddos over the long weekend, and it was so nice to see their happy little faces this morning!  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at wooda@saseas.org any time!!

Thank you for sharing your children with me!
Sincerely,
Mandy Wood
