Week of September 6-10, 2010 7th grade Social Studies: Students will continue their study of Chapter 2: Europe Looks Outward. In this chapter, students will focus on European exploration of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the growing European interest in the Americas. Competition for new lands in the Americas created and worsened tensions among European nations. The exploration and settlement of the Americas laid the foundations for the eventual development of the United States. Students will have group work and homework over each lesson. We will complete lessons 2:2 and 2:3. The Chapter 2 test will be given September 17. A nightly review will benefit all students. 8th grade Social Studies: Students will begin Chapter 3: The Meaning of Citizenship. Being a citizen of the US, by birth or naturalization, involves rights, duties, and responsibilities. It is important for students to understand their civic responsibility to support the basic values that unite American society. Students will have a Chapter 3 quiz on Friday, September 10. A nightly review will benefit all students. 7X Religion: Students will focus on Chapter 2: Friendship with Jesus. Students see that Jesus is completely human. They ponder the meaning of true friendship and then are led to realize that Jesus invites them to friendship with him. We also celebrate the birthday of Mary on September 8. Although we do not know the exact date of her birth, the Church celebrates this feast day nine months after December 8, the feast of her Immaculate Conception. What gifts will we offer our Blessed Mother this week in celebration? |

Vocations
Vocations are discussed throughout the year as they so often relate to our curriculum and current events. In addition to a calling to the priesthood and consecrated religious life, marriage is a holy vocation. Our vocations are vehicles to our sainthood. Vocations share the common elements of being called to a life of chastity, obedience to God, and service to others.
Vocations Week (January 11-17)- Students will be watching the Pope John Paul II video, starring John Voight, witnessing the evolution of his vocation develop as a young adult and spanning his lifetime. Not only does the film address vocations but it will be a further reinforcement of the sanctity of life/Culture of Life which was introduced through the novel, The Giver prior to Christmas break in Mrs. Bohlen's Language Arts class. Students will complete a creative writing assignment in response to the film and much class discussion will also deepen their understanding of how historical/political events and strong faith shaped one of our greatest popes.
