The Political Convention 2010
Vision Statement:
8th grade Social Studies students will be running a mock Presidential Election which will be highlighted with a Political Convention.
Before the Political Convention, students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade will participate in voting in the primary elections representing the states and territories.
The candidate who receives the majority of delegate votes from the states will then be chosen to represent their party in the 2010 Presidential race.
Both the Democrat (8B) and Republican (8A) parties are responsible for creating support and designing a political campaign which includes: speeches, slogans, commercials, posters etc. The height of the campaign will be showcased at the Political Convention were the 6th, 7th and 8th grade delegates will join together to witness and celebrate the political process. A guest speaker will make a brief speech on the importance of voting to kick off the convention.
After hearing the many speeches and seeing the political commercials presented by both the Republican and Democrat Parties at the Political Convention, students will have an opportunity to vote for the President.
During 8th grade Social Studies class, we will discuss the role of political parties, use of propaganda techniques in campaigns, the influence of media, basics of voting and winning elections.
The Political Convention Project will directly impact the local community as well as our nation by adequately evoking the importance of active civil leadership in our young people. This will encourage our students to participate in the democracy of our country by serving others and to become active leaders utilizing technology to spread their message. Student achievement will increase as a result in their participation in this project.
The Political Convention is scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2010 in the Parish Center at approximately 10:10AM-12:25PM.
A modified schedule for classes will be in place on this day.
