Week of September 14, 2015

Religion – We completed Chapter 2.  In this chapter, the students learned about the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Our next chapter will lead us into our study of Mary.  The students will be learning that Mary is a model of discipleship for us and for the Church.  Some of the doctrinal content we will be covering are; Mary is Jesus’ first disciple, Mary is the most blessed among women, Mary is the greatest of all the saints and, how the Church remembers and honors Mary.

Language Arts – Our WoW word is pedestrian.  The definition we are using is dull or boring.  The prompt is: What is the most nonpedestrian thing you have ever done?  In Reading we are beginning our Interactive Reading Literature Notebooks.  The first lesson is on Story Vocabulary where we discuss the meaning of plot, setting complications (problems), antagonist, and protagonist.  First the students viewed a short video of Little Red Riding Hood, then they identified the story vocabulary words with the video.  Finally we connected our class book, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, to this story vocabulary by determining which vocabulary word went with which character or event.

Math – This week, the students learned what a square number was and how to find its square root.  Our final lesson in this chapter is learning about factor strings and prime factorizations.  A study guide will be used to practice for the chapter test.

Social Studies – This week we are completing the last two lessons in   Chapter 1: Our Nation’s Geography.  These two lessons deal with the factors that affect climate and vegetation, and how geographical physical features affect where settlements were built.  The students should be ready for the chapter test by the end of this week.
