Week of February 19th

Hello Parents,
I hope you all enjoyed the 4 day weekend!  I can't believe this weather today!!!  Keep the 70 degree days coming!!!  Our visit to Saint Andrews today was fun!  I think the kiddos are getting excited about moving on to bigger and better!  But not yet!  We still have a lot to learn in the 5th grade!  Here's a peek at our week!
This week we will spend some more time talking about Lent and what it means to us.  We will be working on some beautiful All About Lent poster that will hang in the hallway throughout the season of Lent.  We will also continue our discussion on the Sacrament of Eucharist.
Reading/Language Arts:
Our Word of the Week is PLACID.  For our writing prompt, students need to write about what placates them when they are upset or angry.  Chocolate usually does the trick for me!!  We will begin our next novel, Maniac Magee this week.  I am looking forward to starting this book, as I have not read it in quite a long time!  I expect our first quiz to be next Tuesday over Chapters 1-11.  In Grammar the students will be working on Lessons 1 and 2 of Grammar Flip.  On Friday we will have a quiz over Common and Proper Nouns and Basic Capitalization rules.  Spelling packets are due Friday as usual, as well as our Final Drafts
We will cover Lessons 73-75 this week.  On Monday, the children will work on a Reteach packet over lessons 66-70 and next Tuesday we will have a test over those lessons.
We will work on a Solar System WebQuest today and tomorrow to wrap up our unit on Space.  On Thursday we will begin discussing our next unit-Forces and Motion.  We will make some paper helicopters on Thursday to see if we can get them to drop slowly out of the air and on Friday we will go over the vocabulary for the Chapter.  Expect a Vocabulary quiz next Thursday!  I love this unit and I am hoping to have some fun labs in class!!!  Look for pics on my page!

Have a great week!  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please send me an email!  As always, thank you for sharing your children with me!
